TITLE:  Customer Service Associate                                                                       

REPORTS TO:  Teen Services Manager  

WAGE:  $7.75 an hour and up based on relevant experience

WORK SCHEDULE:  Part-time including day, evening, and Saturday hours as needed

SUMMARY:  Wide range of public service activities at the Limberlost Branch of the Kendallville Public Library. To include: 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Customer Service
    1. Answers telephone
    2. Answers directional questions
    3. Is familiar with library procedures, policies, programs, and operations
    4. Offers assistance at the circulation desk, as needed
    5. Assists customers with the use of computers
    6. Assists customers with copy/fax machine
  2. Reference
    1. Staff the information desk
    2. Be familiar with common reference resources, print and equipment
    3. Conduct appropriate and effective reference interviews
    4. Refer appropriate follow-up referrals to professional staff  as necessary
  3. Readers Advisory
    1. Use basic readers advisory materials
    2. Maintain current awareness of popular trends, authors and titles
    3. Recommend appropriate formats based on knowledge of collection
    4. Be aware of the various reading levels available for patrons
  4. Programming
    1. Assists in the planning and preparation of teen programs
    2. Be familiar with program offerings in the youth services areas of the library
    3. Register patrons for programs as needed
    4. Promote and set-up programs and events under the direction of the respective department manager
    5. Act as a community liaison for planning and executing community events
  5. Clerical/Miscellaneous
    1. Shelve materials as needed
    2. Maintain neat and organized departments and collections
    3. Plan, execute and maintain all displays in the building, with the exception of the Children’s Department
    4. Other duties as assigned or as necessary

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • High school diploma and a valid Indiana drivers license.
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency with a mouse and keyboard and knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
  • Personable, with good work image and attitude, detail orientation, enthusiasm for public service
  • Understanding of the Dewey Decimal System and ability to use online Public Access Catalog
  • Fluent in English oral and written; articulate over the phone and in person.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Frequent walking and standing (upwards of three hours at a time) and sitting.
  • Position involves lifting and carrying at least thirty (30) pounds and the ability to push at least one hundred (100) pounds on a wheeled cart.
  • Manual dexterity; physical flexibility to operate computer keyboard and mouse, calculator, telephone, label maker, copy and fax machine and writing tools.
  • Good vision, correctable to 20/20 and in color.
  • Clear speaking voice and good hearing.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LIBRARY EMPLOYEES

  • Ability to perform specific job duties to specified standards

  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers
  • Ability to comprehend and follow library policies and procedures, including emergency procedures.
  • Ability to develop  library-wide operations, activities and holdings
  • Ability to exercise good judgment at all times.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements of the specific job title.
  • Ability to maintain a friendly, courteous, and professional demeanor
  • Ability to enforce Kendallville Public Library Patron Behavior Code.
  • Participate in professional development, including at least 3 webinars/quarter and staff and in-services trainings as scheduled.
